This is a 2006 Walt Disney movie about Vince Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg. The story is about an ex-school teacher and Philadelphia bartender who tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles football team and, according to the movie, had no professional or college experience beforehand.
Not quite true. At that time (in the late 1970’s) I lived in the Philadelphia area and was an ardent Eagles fan. Papale was a track star in college (he could really run) and did have a short stint in the now defunct World Football League.
Anyway, the rest of the story seems to be true as the Eagles were a lousy team at the time and coach Dick Vermeil was hired to right the ship. Vermeil saw “character” in Papale and put him on the team against the recommendations of his coaching staff.
I do remember Papale became a star in his role on the team and lasted 3 years before a shoulder injury forced him to quit. At 30 years of age, he was the oldest rookie in the NFL.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Perhaps this was caused somewhat by my having “been there”. But, I think any sports fan would like it also. Definite “yes’.
